SENSITIVITY

The brochures of metal detector manufacturers never specify exactly the detection depths of the various machines. That is confusing for the customers but there is a reason for it. Only C.Scope is confident enough in the performance of its detectors to explain those reasons. There are many things which affect the depth of detection: the size of the target object, its metal composition, the ground type, moisture content and so on. Detection range in air is always considerably greater than in the ground. Metal detector manufacturers are frightened that, if they specify that their product will detect a coin at 10 inches, another manufacturer will put in their brochure that a coin can be detected at 12 inches, and the customer will assume that the second detector is best. Of course the coin used as a test piece by the second manufacturer could be twice the size, or they could have carried out the test in air whereas the first manufacturer did their tests in dry sand. It is the absence of any universally accepted test standard which deters manufacturers from being specific about depth of detection. However, THE PLAIN TRUTH FROM C.SCOPE IS THAT METAL DETECTOR DEPTH PERFORMANCE IS BROADLY SIMILAR FOR ALL BRANDS, according to like for like comparisons in the lower, middle or higher part of each manufacturer's range.

Depth of detection is not the most important part of metal detector performance. Some people seem to believe that the deeper you go, the more treasure you will find. This is absolutely NOT TRUE! The deeper you go, the less treasure is to be found. Just think about it a moment. Imagine that whilst out riding his horse, 500 years ago, a wealthy nobleman loses a valuable gold chain. It falls into the long grass and sinks further into the mud over the centuries. Eventually the ground is cultivated and turned over every year by the ploughshare. That valuable gold chain is going to end up on average about 10 inches down, and well within the range of a medium to high range metal detector. Pocketfuls of lost change and everyday artefacts from a thousand years ago will be found just below the surface of the ground, up to about 6 inches down depending on the soil type. Even big treasures buried long ago with the intention of keeping them safe, are usually no more than 3 feet down, but, because they consist of quite a mass of metal, they are a large target, again well within the range of any good metal detector.

Another thing which affects the depth of detection is the amount of discrimination you use. In the technology of metal detection, there's always a trade-off. You can't have it all. Even the most expensive high depth detector will only give its maximum depth in all-metal mode. As soon as you try to discriminate out the less valuable metals, it cuts down the depth, and the more discriminate you use, the more it cuts down the depth. On many sites which are contaminated with a lot of rubbish, such as old iron building nails, a good discriminator such as CS1220R is going to be a lot more useful to you than the most sensitive all-metal detector on the market.

Some manufacturers would have you believe that just because their detector is 10% more powerful than another (that's just 1 extra inch on a typical target at 10 inches), you are going to find so much more treasure with their machine. C.SCOPE PLAIN TRUTH SAYS, " ANY GOOD DETECTOR WILL FIND TREASURE! IT'S WHERE YOU USE YOUR DETECTOR AND HOW YOU USE YOUR DETECTOR THAT GETS RESULTS." C.Scope detectors are good detectors right the way up the range. Every C.Scope is great value for money, as little as half the price of comparable competition machines. C.Scopes are designed by enthusiasts to be easy to use. You work as a team with your C.Scope and that's why C.SCOPE IS the most successful detector brand.

C.Scope approach to the question of depth of detection is refreshing and honest. We will not get embroiled in an advertising slanging match with each manufacturer claiming that their detectors go miles deeper than anyone else's. After all, they can't all be the deepest. Somebody is telling porkies.

The actual truth is that there is very little to tell between the detector
ranges of each of the main manufacturers. There's just a few centimetres in it. A detector which might be deeper than another in one type of ground/target situation may be less sensitive in a different setting.

Much more important in the search for deep treasure is user technique and the way that the detector presents the information. That's where C.Scope has the edge. Our detectors have been developed over a very long time of understanding what detectorists want.

For each model in the C.Scope range we give a star rating. That is just to give an idea of the depth capability in relation to the other machines in the range. In actual depth of detection you will find that our detectors are broadly similar to the corresponding units in the other main manufacturers ranges. You can't say fairer than that.

Oh, and don't forget the incredible value for money you always get with C.Scope.
